Nico Froehlich
I really like this image, created by Nico Froehlich as it is clear that it is beginning to become night time in the images which you are able to see due to the sunset as well as the way that the images is composed as the image has certain parts of it such as the way that the boy is sitting results in the image being really simple but also the way that its composed I do really enjoy as you can slightly tell that the image is naturally occurring. The colour in this image is something that I really like due to the colour being quite clear in the image but also there are only a few colours in the bottom half of the images which was something I found really interesting as it meant that the images were quite divided at the same time the person is shown to be off the ground

Making day images
Evaluation
For these images I was trying to find all of the features all the red in the world which resulted in some images in which I believe work really well as I was able to find features of red of which I had not noticed before
Portraits
Portraits attempt two
With the second attempt I believed that the usage of the two studios would work really well as I was able to use the lighting to do the best I can. For the first three images I used the first studio which I believed work best for me as the image worked extremely well as the colours pink and blue worked as a contrast which resulted in the first image which I believe is the best out of the images that I had taken but also the images that were taken were in my opinion better than the first attempt as I was able to analyse the light that I was going to use do to the experience gain from the previous attempt. The backdrop in the first studio worked really well in my opinion as I was able to have the subject of the images sit down with the effect of the image still being relatively the same
portraits inspired by Nico Froehlich
For the place, background, and foreground I chose a park near where I live usually hold volleyball free play for my friends which I consider my community. For the models I decided to try and capture them in natural events but the knowledge of the camera being there tempted them to continuously sway their thoughts to be mainly about the camera resulting in them looking at the camera the majority of the time. Due to the importance of the location in my community I tried to involve it by getting parts of the volleyball net into the photo but also by trying to capture segments of the field in the images which also resulted in a range of close range and long range images which I really enjoyed taking
Hicham Benohoud
For Hicham Benohoud I found that the work has a constant contrast of the students working and then the subjects of the photos as they contrast in my opinion as the work is something that I am unsure about as the work seems forced in a way making the view on the work really hard to understand as I don’t understand what was happening in the schools resulting in interesting relationships in the images
For this image I’m really intrigued to learn more about the relationships in this images as the stick is seen as a barrier in a way so that the people are divided which could be a case of symbolic imagery but also the image has many properties that are contrasting such as the nature in the school but also the contrast of what the students are doing making the image more interesting
For these images I was experimenting with the aperture and these were the images and due to the sunlight I had to turn the aperture quite high to ensure that the quality of the images were good relating to how the images were quite bright and the light was quite strong resulting in the images having quite strong colours which relates to the RAW quality of the images meaning that the images were becoming more like in real life quality. The aim being that I learnt whilst taking these images was the display function of the camera resulting in me being able to find out what I am needing to do to get the best out of the images that I can. The images had an issue as the brightness made the images difficult to create
Sally Mann Research
Sally Mann's work is something that I have noticed recently due to the constant usage of young people as well as the feature of the lakes within the images making it something that has became interesting work due to the colour being in black and white which relates to how the community is and the portraits are all quite similar with the persons face being in the centre of the image allowing for the image
Diptych portraits
For the diptych portraits I have paired 6 portraits with 6 pictures of architecture whether that the images are deserving to be matched with others and there are some factors that I am unable to control but those factors make it so the images are more fun to create as it resulted in numerous luxury photos such as the sun behind the city or the trees causing shadows due to where the sun is but due to that the possibility of chance was quite fun
Nico Froelich workshop
When Nico Froelich came to do the workshop we were tasked with getting photographs of strangers to try and boos our confidence which was quite difficult to do and resulted in images that I would of not really taken and I really pushed my boundaries to try and make this happen as I usually do not photograph strangers so making these images was quite hard for me
After the workshop and reviewing my work I decided that this image is my favourite due to the positioning and framing being some of the best I had done at the time of which I was very proud of as the photo was the third in a series of five and there is a considerable improvement in quality after taking this image due to the way that the subject is not looking at the camera interests me more than the images with people looking at the camera

Deana Lawson - Nation
Within the images there are three guys with two of them having visible jewellery as well as having the one to the very right of the screen having false teeth covering him with the teeth in image being in the guy in the centre's mouth. The composition of the image is different to the typical composition with there being two people on the sofa and the guy separated to the right of the image which provides with me with the idea it was staged guy's mouth is being held open resulting in me believing that everything is quite unusual and seems quite out of place especially which leads with me looking at the image and noticing that there is a splif in the guy in the centre's hand whilst having a lighter behind him. Then looking at the guy at the right he is imitating him having his finger on the trigger of a gun which gives a threatening demeanour. The image reminds me of the gan activity that occurs in America as I speculate that the images being based upon the gangs in the USA. The usage of light in the image is based upon the the lighting hitting the light reflecting off the right of the people displaying a sort of reflection but the light also seems to be aimed towards the jewellery. The part of the image that impact is the most effective is the contrast between the quite plain background and the men who are covered in jewellery. This image differs from reality as the stage and jewellery seem to be too much of a contrast which makes me question the logistics of the image. I think the reason to create this photograph is to show what the majority of people may have contrasting lives when and out of their homes. I think the most effective part of the image is having the guy seeming to have his mouth forced whilst having the image of the false teeth in the top right of the image as it creates the expectation of the fake teeth in the guys mouth. After further research it shows that the fake teeth at the top right of the image is George Washington's fake teeth after looking MoMA website and then finding out the people in the images are hip-hop artists and the jewellery are relating to their public personas. I think that the people would believe that the images was of gang members in the USA if they did not have any knowledge of the people who were in the images as well as the previous work of Deanna Lawson's work. I think that the part of the image that I will remember is George Washington's fake teeth in the image as I believe that it is peculiar to have the fake teeth of the first president of the USA but it also makes the place of origin of this work clearer as its saying that the image was created in the USA.
For the research of this image I looked at both the MoMA as well as the Dazed articles about this image as I believe that the image is something is staged and the sources that I looked at confirmed my suspicions with it resulting in the image. The new knowledge does not really affect my opinion on the image as it was something that I had already speculations about so it just confirms my thoughts. For this image I believe that it has obviously been staged as due to that there is some methods that I am intrigued about as with the positioning of the hip-hop artists what was their main thought when doing so as the image seem to have the light hitting them perfectly especially the guy in the centre of the image since the guy was seeming to have some sort of issue with what was occurring in the image

Ernst Haas - Indianapolis 500, 1957
Within this image I see two race cars in front of the crowd at the Indianapolis 500 in 1957 with the concentration on the number 5 car which makes me believe that the car was focused on since the start of the corner due to the blur and distortion of the image especially the car behind gives that away as the streak on colour that follows the car. The main thing that I recognise in the image is the colours used to represent the cars as during the early stages on international car competitions red was used to represent cars from Italy which causes me to suspect that the two cars in the image is Italian. In the image the main quality that seems new to me is the distortion on the spoiler of the car as it creates an interesting flow of colour across the image. The image is something that I have seen on a few car motorsport images as well as the image being similar to some of the images that I have taken before which means that I have a better understanding of the image properties as well as the creation of this as the fact that Ernst Haas follows the car around the the corner of the track but it results in the car seeming to be moving in the actual image as if it was part of a video. Ernst Haas has captured the colour of the image using a coloured film camera which was unusual during the time as the main focus was black and white images for photography artists whilst Ernst Haas contrasted the usual which made it so the capture of light in the film was unusual but also makes it so the image is more about the fragments of light in the image due to the motion working with the fragments of light resulted in the image being more about the motion rather than the actual vehicles in the image which I really like seeing as the distortion of the colour. In the image the space between the two vehicles is quite close as the image was taken at a competitive event in America but the space between the two cars convinces me that an overtake or something of the sorts was about to occur and it is kinda clear that the car in front was at a higher speed due to the distortion that occurred to the car behind which make the quality of the image better in my opinion. The image differs to reality due to the distortion of parts of the image such as the car that is behind car number 5 but also the distortion of the crowd differs from reality as it is visible of where the car has gone round the corner resulting in the image seeming like there is two levels of the crowd or like they are standing up but that is due to the way that the image. The artist most likely made the image to go into the motion component of the old colour images which is to display how the movement of sports which I really like
Photos similar to online posts (staged images)
For this selection of images, I used my friends Instagram and snapchat accounts to reference what they would typically post and then based upon what they had posted in the past I tried to replicate and I found trying to replicate the images quite difficult to begin with as they often caught me taking the photo but also when I did capture some moments they really enjoyed the photos so they have many downloaded on their phones. From the images I believe that its quite obvious that I and a few friends went out with my friend driving us to a race track (that I believe is quite obvious due to the sign being in the background of one of the images) and we spent some time there
Favourite photo edited
This image is my favourite out of the images that I staged so I edited it to try and make the image appear more true to what actually occurred as the original image was much brighter than the actual scene so I did some editing so that it was realistic as the people in the image were quite cold and in the original version the image seemed bright and warm which was the complete opposite of the truth so that made the editing more of a challenge as it meant that the image had to be something that reflected the truth and there was a few things I had to edit to make sure that the true scene, in my opinion, was seen. The light of the cars was definitely something that I was not expecting but also the image benefited from it in my opinion but there are certain features which I believe that benefited the image as the bright colour of the cars contrasted the rest of the image. Now reflecting on the image the amount of greenery in the image is interesting as for a race circuit, brands hatch priorities the natural area around it which contrasts many other big race circuits which makes the place seem more inviting in my opinion as the greenery at the track makes it seem a much larger place in comparison to the actual size of it as in many race circuits people are really cramped together. The matter of how there is free access to the majority of the view points allows for there to be people everywhere but also so that people seem spaced out which I found quite nice as it allowed for there to be a sense of freedom at every part of the circuit.
The reasoning for the image of the map is to demonstrate the size of the track as well as showing how the track is fully accessible for those who want to be in a more secluded area so the choice of positioning towards the track on the longest straight of the track was something that I believe was a good choice as it allowed for the best selection of images.

Questionnaire
Within photography I have noticed throughout most of my work that the theme of motion is consistently coming up and that did not occur to me until I had begun to review Ernst Haas' work and his topic in both old colour and new colour where he had begun to look at motion and I had noticed that some of the images had similar properties to the images that I had taken which was quite interesting for me as it meant that there was a renown artist that had taken interest in something that I had.
For my project I would really like to know what type of camera lens would be most suited for the capturing of motion as my current camera lens does alright but when reviewing the images by photographers who have better equipment than I, they seem to produce images at a better quality as well as the images looking more like the images that I was aiming to collect as the colour as well as the distortion of the image due to the focus of the image being fixed on the car creating lines in the image to make it seem like the car is constantly in motion

It is quite difficult to slim it down to exactly what I want to document but the main thing that I have decided on is sports in motion as it allows for some images that when reviewing create masterpieces in my opinion as something so simple looks so nice to me with the way that the adrenaline impacts those involved it seems like something that I could never stop photographing as the images have a passion from both the subjects in the image but also the person taking the image. There are images that when people are proud of them, they post it everywhere with many people pinning the images to the top of their accounts on Instagram so that people can see those photos when they first review the persons account.
the amount I want to document has dependence on whether I am involved in the series of motion taking place or if I am just a bystander. As with me being involved in what is taking place I am less likely to document what is happening as I want to remain involved in the motion occurring but if I am a bystander I am more likely to take photographs which is proven in my opinion by the series of images that I had taken whilst I was at Brands Hatch on the 21/04/2024 as the images are at a higher quantity compared to when I would go out and play volleyball with my friends as it results with the amount of images being much lower. So when I am a bystander the way for me to feel involve with whats going on is by taking photographs so I enjoy documenting what is occurring more.

When taking these images I want the viewer to see the motion that is occurring where it be something simple or if it is a complicated piece of motion occurring, I want the viewer to see it as the motion as the subject of the image although there may be parts of the image that may be more interesting which challenges the theme of the image
I want the viewer to share the same experience that I did when I was taking the images, the thrill of seeing the event as the events that I attend are usually quite interesting to me so I hope for the viewer to experience the same amount of interest that I was feeling whilst I was taking the photos |
I want the viewer to experience the same level of excitement that I was feeling whilst taking the photos due to the images that were taken although difficult to create were very nice once I had finished creating the images I found that the images were quite interesting but due to the colour but I also feel that the work could improve with the work being concentrated about how the proof of motion in the image but also the work is mored based around the colour of the cars in my images which was the initial idea as the work but then I have noticed a sort of drift to the commercial type of photography by the end of the photos so I hope the viewer would feel the same fascination that I felt about the cars in the images

I have greatly analysed Ernst Haas' work due to the focus on motion in his work is something that I found interesting and kind of based some of my work upon which allowed me to experiment with the work. The work that Ernst Haas does in his motion sections of both of his old colour and new colour sections as the versions of old colour has a deeper focus on all sorts of motion whilst the new colour section of motion allows for a higher focus on people which I find interesting as it seems that the photos the Ernst Haas' photos of motor vehicles stopped with the new colour which made me think whether the photos he took were not to his standard or whether he found difficulties with taking photos with new colour cameras which caused me to speculate deeply and research about it but I could not find much about it.
For Ernst Haas, his use of coloured film during a duration that professional photographers seemed to over look it interested me and then to add onto the matter of their use of motion in their images really fascinated me as the use of colour then was controversial but also the images' motion is something that is my favourite part and I have picked qualities form the images into my work which allows for my work

perusing my interests
When taking these photos I had a large focus on DTO Motor's number 103 due to knowing the driver so a large portion of the images (both on this page and the 'extra photographs from days out') were of them driving which has now been sent it to him. The images were of the motion of the vehicles although there was the constant temptation to take photographs of the vehicles in a commercial manner. as well as enjoying the images due to the rain made a challenge for me to take the image. The images here were mainly taken in a box that overlooks the track as the rain was very persistent causing me to be tempted to stay in the box for the majority of the time.
This image is the best out of the 36 in my opinion due to the matter of the the division of thirds in the image although a bit of the window is in the image, I believe that the rule of thirds is prevalent in the image as there an empty third of the track and the bottom of the image and then the central third has the cars on the track which links to the trees and then the top third is the sky which mainly composed of fog
There is the issue of the side of the window of which I believe has an impact on the image as it means that there is part of the image which draws attention away from the main composition of the image which is a little annoying but it occurred due to the fact of the image being taken during the rain and I was inside a room so that the camera would not be damaged by the heavy rainfall but I now believe that I should of risked it by opening the window and leaning out of the window and trying to take the images in that manner so the image would not have part of the window disrupting the image |
Me as a photographer
On this sheet I was placing dots on where along a line I would place the photography that I enjoy taking as it meant that I was able to determine whether I was enjoying certain parts of the work but at the same time I was able to compare the work that I create to the work of my colleagues but also the work that I created so when I reviewed my work it meant that I was able to allocate certain parts of my work to these ideas which I really enjoyed seeing as I was unconsciously applying ideas that I like into the work that I was producing

Research
To begin the research I looked at the official Canon website due to the advise there is usually quite useful to me due to the fact that I am using their product but the advice was to spend money that I do not have available to me. So then I began to look at ideas for motion photography as I felt as if I begin to slim it down I can look at the images and see how people slim it down which is something that I find quite interesting as it mainly gives the idea of slow shutter speeds which for me makes it seem better. The ideas that I find the best is images of busy locations from a difference which is something that I really like the sound of as you are able to be somewhere that is peaceful and then take an image of it but also I am intrigued by the sports photographs as well as the photographs of urban photography due to the pieces of motion in the ideas which I find quite nice to think about (photos above are from photowhoa.com) The images are those which are placed next to the text of which that I can look at and try to gain ideas from as well as the tips that were provided are there to help me and the ideas look quite useful from my perspective
Research pt.2
For my second piece of research I used the poem "Alone" by Edgar Allan Poe, which is something that I usually don't think of using as research but I thought to try something new. The ideas that are mentioned straight away in the poem is that there was a different perspective to life compared to the standard which correlates to how people who pursue photography views some moments in a way that many may view as unusual but that makes the perspective linked to a certain group of people but that intrigues me and has made me more lenient to listen to poetry as the way that the poem describes the scenery is similar to the parts of light which would capture my eyes and want to photograph it which I really like but the mention of how the lightning passes the poet by it would be a piece of natural motion that I would enjoy photographing.
Photoshoot
For this Photoshoot it was originally something that I was not planning for as I was trying to capture the movements but that ended poorly with there being too much light which made the images over exposed. This caused for me to switch my images from me staying and using the camera to follow the person and then switching it to me moving with the camera, matching the motion of the subject which helped me make some images that I was really fond of.
My favourite images from the photoshoot
For the image on the left I was matching the movements of the subject whilst also placing the focus of the image on the person who was at the front of the group which allowed for a good background blur which resulted in images that both I and the subject of the image was very pleased with. For the second image there were numerous subjects with me walking closer to them and it made a range of levels of focus on the subject with the highest level of focus being on the blonde boy on the right whilst the least focus and the third boy on the right which makes the range of focus of the images really interesting in my opinion
